What is
Bipolar
?

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental health condition characterized by significant mood swings that go beyond the normal ups and downs of life. It involves alternating episodes of mania and depression, creating a cyclic pattern that can vary in intensity and duration. During manic episodes, individuals may experience heightened energy levels, euphoria, increased impulsivity, and reduced need for sleep. Conversely, depressive episodes are marked by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, low energy, and loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities.

Symptoms

Manic Episodes:

  1. Elevated Mood: Persistent feelings of intense happiness, euphoria, or irritability.
  2. Increased Energy: Marked rise in energy levels, often accompanied by restlessness and a sense of being hyperactive.
  3. Impulsivity: Engaging in risky behaviors without considering potential consequences, such as excessive spending, substance abuse, or reckless driving.
  4. Decreased Need for Sleep: Feeling rested with significantly reduced sleep requirements.
  5. Racing Thoughts: Rapid and uncontrollable thoughts, sometimes leading to rapid speech.

Depressive Episodes:

  1. Persistent Low Mood: Extended periods of sadness, hopelessness, or a general sense of emptiness.
  2. Loss of Interest: Diminished interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyable.
  3. Fatigue: Persistent lack of energy, even after adequate rest.
  4. Sleep Disturbances: Changes in sleep patterns, including insomnia or excessive sleep (hypersomnia).
  5. Difficulty Concentrating: Impaired ability to focus, make decisions, and complete tasks.
  6. Appetite Changes: Significant changes in appetite, leading to weight loss or gain.
